Round Robbin and banned books

Oh wow it's late and I am sleepy. But anyways I just wanted to share something with you all. If we have class together I hope you all remember when we were talking about the reading groups the round Robbin thing. Well I remembered when I was younger I was one of those kids who had the books with the big pictures and short words. And it wasn't because I was dumb it was because the dang teacher was an idiot and I guess she thought I was stupid because I had been in bilingual classes. There were times that I did end up filling dumb but that just made me more mad at the teacher. She never took the time to actually let me read to her. If she had done that in the first place she would have seen that I could speak, read, and write in both Spanish and English. So please don't do this when you have your own classroom. Be the type of teacher that listens to all the students and don't just look at them and think, Ah her parents are Mexican what does she know! Ah We know a lot! Last year when I would go to the elementary schools to put hours or just to help out I would love to read to the students. And enjoyed listening to them read to me because reading out loud does help. I sometimes think I should be a librarian because I enjoy kid's books so much.
I have always enjoyed reading. I remember my mother always reading to us when we were younger. Even now that I'm older we still read together or we tell each other about the new book that we are reading. My mom has never denied me a book. She has never told me I couldn't read it. In high school I remember my freshman year we started to read Native Son, and well some boy's mom had that book taken away. She said that kids shouldn't be reading stuff like that. For those of you who have read it I don't know if you remember the masturbation part in the first couple of pages in the book. Well anyways he showed his mom and we got the book taken away. I was so angry! HELLO YOUR SON IS HOW OLD?! AND YOU MEAN TO TELL ME HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT MASTURBATION IS! Parents who are like that need to grow up. That same day that they took away the book I made my mom buy me the book. I wanted to read the book, and I did i would take it to school and read it during lunch and teachers would walk by and tell me that I was not allowed to read it and I would say, "OH YES I AM!" I have read the book twice. And if you have not read it you should it was awesome.
There are lots of books on the banned list that i read in high school that I thought were great books. I should google kids books that have been banned. I will do that tomorrow. And will put up some websites for the project.

  1. I can see that you are very passionate about reading. I think it ignites more passion in you when you are told you are not allowed that particular book. I think itis sad that alot of teachers tend to read labels previously given to children instead of assessing them first. I plan on teaching special ed and I plan to try to do my best to make sure every child, even the ones that are branded have a fighting chance.I just woder what happened to you when the teachers got after you about banned books . When you protested. Did they leave you alone? My new url is lovinlitatscool7@gmail.com Visit anytime Thanks... Karen

  2. I love your enthusiasm! I agree with you 100% Teachers are facilitators and should act as conduits of knowledge for their children to some extent. We should never make judgements regarding our children based on what we think due to a student's appearance or culture. Let the student talk and use their language in order to ascertain what their interests are so that they may be better serviced in your classroom! Keep up the good work, and I am eager to see the websites that you have found.

  3. I too have a love for reading and have always instilled reading reading in my children at a young age. One of my children struggled with with reading and at christmas time I would ask my family to give my kids lots of books! Reading is so essential in a child's life, it can open up a whole world of learning for them.
