Chapter 3 understanding what we read
Reading is not hard. The hard part is understanding and comprehending what you are reading at the same time. There are times that I my self have to read things twice because I'll start day dreaming while reading. It is very very very possible to read a paragraph, a page or even a book with out knowing what you have read. There have been times that I remember that we had to do required reading for school and in the end we had to write an essay and do a project and students essays and projects would be about something totally different to what the book was about. The problem was that they did not understand, comprehend what the book was about. We as future educators need to find a way to make sure that our students stay engaged in what they are reading. If there is something that catches their attention and they enjoy reading it and understand it, we need to make sure that they keep enjoy reading it. But still at the same time try to make sure they read and understand the required text.

Don't forget some children have no story time with at home or with other family members. Learning to read for these children will be very hard. Reading isn't hard once a child has learned to master sounds of letters and blend those letters to make words.
